Ferreira has made Barca Velha since 1952, after its chief winemaker, Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, returned from studying winemaking techniques in Bordeaux. His aim was to create a revolutionary red table wine that displayed the richness and complexity of the Douro Valley terroir, one that realized Portugal`s potential to create renowned table wines alongside its famed fortified wines, Port and Madeira. Once the final blend is determined - usually 50% Tinta Roriz, with lesser amounts of Touriga Nocional, Touriga Francesa, and Tinta Barroca - Barca Velha is bottled unfiltered after 12 to 18 months in new Portuguese oak. Like Vega Sicilia`s Unico, Barca Velha is only released when the winery feels it is ready to drink, after about 7 years in the bottle. The wine will continue to improve with long-term age.
a blend of 45% Touriga Franca, 35% Touriga Nacional, 10% Tinta Roriz and 10% Tinto C?o. It comes in at 14.7% alcohol. It has a beautiful finish, mature flavors and tannins that balance rather than overwhelm the wine, at least with a little air. It still has a lot of tannic pop, but that is not scary anymore. I also loved the tinges of cherry and chocolate.
