Cappellano Otin Fiorin Pie Franco Barolo is a stunning expression of Nebbiolo, showcasing a dark, translucent hue and deeply expressive notes of dark cherries, warming spices, and a hint of cough syrup. Though deceptively medium-bodied, this Barolo is crafted in a powerful style that leans more toward palate sensation than aromatics, yet it never loses its sense of purity, nobility, and impeccable structure. It's a bold and elegant wine, perfect for pairing with hearty dishes like braised short ribs, truffle risotto, or aged cheeses.

Cappellano Description

Cappellano Otin Fiorin Pie Franco Barolo is what Teobaldo famously called a “backwards evolution”—a passionate return to the roots of true Barolo and the purest form of expression. It also stands as a heartfelt tribute to his grandfather Giovanni, who spent his final years in Africa exploring whether the adoption of grafted vines was truly inevitable, and searching for vine stock resistant to the devastating Phylloxera parasite. While many predicted failure and believed the ungrafted vines would never survive, those very rows remain intact and thriving—bold symbols of courage, vision, and defiance. The result is a Barolo that’s delightfully “irregular”—seductive, wildly complex, and intensely expressive. It captures the raw, unfiltered soul of Serralunga d’Alba without artifice or gimmickry. Pair this iconic wine with earthy truffle risotto, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, or slow-braised meats to fully appreciate its deep character and sense of place.

Antonio Galloni

The 2018 Barolo Piè Franco is bright, effusive and beautifully lifted. As it almost always is, the Piè Franco is an ethereal Barolo that emphasizes perfume, persistence and depth of flavor, all in a deceptively light to medium-bodied style that is easy to underestimate. There is some youthful austerity, naturally, but also captivating inner perfume and tons of personality. The 2018 brings back so many memories of tasting in the Cappellano cellar in much simpler times. There was no hype over the wines, no frenzy for the latest releases and no pandemic. The Cappellano Franco is one of the handful of Barolos that transcend wine and enter the realm of culture, family and traditional values. Yes, I liked it. A lot. For readers with very sensitive palate, the volatile acidity feels on the slightly elevated side, but not to the point that it is an issue. Many years ago, Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.
