Made in amphorae, this wine is ripe and full bodied, with an open character. Bold black fruits and ripe tannins bring out the richness of the wine. Spice comes from the wood aging, which adds an extra dimension. Drink from 2020.

The 2017 Jose de Sousa red, an Alentejo wine, is a blend of 58% Grand Noir, 22% Trincadeira and 20% Aragones, aged for nine months in new and mostly French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. A touch herbal, this goes on to prove its worth with its nuanced finish, fine structure and fresh feel. Very elegant, it is dry and precise, pointed and penetrating. It's not even a little bit fruity—this is made for food. This still adds some dried cherry flavors—and that touch of green. This could be better, more expressive, this time next year, and it should hold for another decade. It's a nice value.

Black cherry and currant flavors are detailed with graphite, black tea and dried herb notes in this focused, medium-bodied red. Moderate, integrated tannins offer good support through the tangy finish. Baga, Trincadeira and Aragonez.
