Adelphi Selections, based in Ardnamurchan, Argyll, in the Scottish Highlands, sources and bottles an exclusive collection of super-premium single-malt, single-cask Scotch whiskies from the most respected distilleries in Scotland. The Adelphi Nosing Team is chaired by world-renowned whisky expert Charles Maclean. On average, one of every 40 barrel samples tasted is selected for bottling under the Adelphi Selections label. Each selection is made by judging the unique characteristics bestowed by individual casks, resulting in rare bottlings that represent a completely unique and authentic representation of a given distillery and a given cask.
Tasting notes
Another 1st fill Spanish oak, ex-Sherry hogshead ofGlenrothes - filled at “still” strength, this is still sitting at 66.7% vol after 7 years of maturation. A lovely dark mahogany colour with amber lights and virtually no beading due to the short time spent in cask. Some nose prickle, as you would expect, with fragrant dried herbs in a bouquet garnish wrapped in hessian, hard Scottish toffee and burnt chocolate sponge cake. Then, new canvas gym shoes with some chalky Edinburgh rock (rhubarb flavour) and Tunnocks caramel wafers. Sweet, then salt water taffy, with a rich and pronounced finish. With the addition of water, it becomes more tablet-like, sweet then tannic. Very mouth-drying with a spicy finish of lingering chillies.

Massive with a huge sherried attack; seven years is the right time to bottle. There’s light raisin, date, and fig roll/treacle toffee, but it’s a funny one as it develops; while it is superficially impressive, it becomes clear that the oak-driven and distillery-derived parts, aren’t talking to each other. Water brings out light cask-driven sulfur. On the palate, the black fruits and Demerara rum take initial charge along with menthol. It’s tannic already, though. Lacks integration, but what else to do?
