L'Avion ("the airplane" in French) is named in honor of a peculiarly long, rectangular block of vines at Stolpman
Vineyards, which was the former site of the airstrip used by Santa Ynez Valley pilots in the 1930's and 40's.
L'Avion is a proprietary white blend of Roussanne, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. These three grapes contribute
three distinct parts that meld to form a deliciously rich and fragrant wine: The Roussanne fills the wine with
unctuous flavors of honey, rosemary blossoms, and sandalwood; the Viognier provides aromas of rose petals and
lemon verbena; and the Sauvignon Blanc firmly balances the wine with mouth-wateringly crisp acidity. A passage
of seven months in 100% new 500-liter barrels gives this wine a subtle nuance of vanilla and fresh coconut.
|Ripe and tropical, with plenty of mango, apricot and butter peach, the 2013 Roussanne Ballard Canyon is medium+-bodied, ripe and textured on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity and a clean finish. This is a richer, food-friendly style that stays thoroughly enjoyable.
