New Zealand has defined a new benchmark style for Sauvignon Blanc. Its purity of fruit expression with pungent notes of capsicum and gooseberry has captured the hearts of the U.S. market. Much of New Zealand’s success with this grape is based on the winemakers’ mantra of ‘quality above all. Beyond Sauvignon Blanc, other grape varieties are starting to get some attention too, such as Chardonnay from Gisbourne and Pinot Noir from Martinborough and Central Otago.
